Few people have impacted the sport of boxing the way Future Hall of Fame boxer Bernard Hopkins, who made his professional debut in October 1988, has.  He has fought the titans of the sport, including Oscar De La Hoya, Roy Jones, Jr., Felix “Tito” Trinidad, and many others, but he has also been successful outside of the ring, as a minority shareholder, managing partner, and head of East Coast Operations for Golden Boy Promotions.

Some of the success Hopkins has experienced outside of the ring has been as a father, and I asked him what being a father meant to him.  “Being a father means responsibilities. It means that you pave the way for your children. You have to lead your children toward positive experiences, whether its education or a positive experience. You’re the watchdog of their future. You’re their guardian. You have to be protective and nurturing, but also prepared to lead your children to be independent and successful.”

I also had the chance to ask “The Alien” an off-beat question about choosing a super power as a father.  “If I had a super power as a father it would be to make sure they learn lessons, but soften the blow of their mistakes.  I want them to be successful, but learn lessons along the way and rise above the hard times.  I wouldn’t want to take independence and lessons learned away from them, but make sure that they grow.”  This seems like a power that Hopkins already has.

Hopkins, the current IBF, WBA, and IBA light-heavyweight world champion, who, remarkably, is still at the top of his sport despite approaching his 50th birthday in January, has been an incredible leader by example in the ring, and certainly inspires outside of it as well.

Below is footage from an interview with Hopkins before his bout at Barclays Center against Tavoris Cloud.
