What To Make Of The Dez Bryant Video Rumors

Dez Bryant is focused in despite the rumors (photo via www.sportsgrid.com)

Heading into this offseason, the Dallas Cowboys had a decision to make. Wide receiver Dez Bryant and running back DeMarco Murray have both made it to free agency and Dallas was perceived to have to make a choice. Would it be Murray or Bryant? Most would take Bryant when faced with this question but the recent developments with him could shift the thinking in Dallas. The internet seems to be abuzz these days with the information that there is a tape out that shows Dez Bryant behaving badly. Some rumors are out that the tape is so bad that it could be 5 times worse than what happened in a casino with Ray Rice and his then-fiancée Janay Palmer. And instantly, the speculation began as to what happened and when it happened. But all the while, the negotiations between the Cowboys and Dez Bryant have been going on. And as March 2nd approaches, time is becoming short on what the Cowboys will do. The Dallas Cowboys have until Monday, March 2nd at 4 pm est to designate who they will use their franchise tag on. And by all indications, they will use it on Dez Bryant. But Bryant, who is looking for long-term security, is not very happy to have that designation looming over his head. So some have assumed that the rumors out there have come from the Dallas organization in an attempt to drive down Dez’s value.

The value of Dez as a wide receiver to the Cowboys is immeasurable. He is the straw that stirs the drink for them at the wide receiver position. And he is arguably the best player on their offense. But it seems as if Dallas has been reluctant to pay him what he wants. After all, this is the same team that implemented the “Dez Rules” in order to protect their investment. But would they really do what is rumored they have done? It is being said that this rumored tape is from almost five years ago in the parking lot of a Walmart and that his former agent was paying someone hush money to keep it private. It is also rumored that the Cowboys knew about the tape. All that speculation honestly sounds like just a little bit too much for the Cowboys to be involved in just to make sure and keep Bryant at a lower cost. After all, Jerry Jones has been known to dole out big contracts. And besides, if it was proven they were involved in this matter just to keep Dez’s cap number down, then someone would be fired immediately. Of course that action would be the short-term answer, but the damage caused would potentially affect the Cowboys from the standpoint of keeping their own players. Even though the damage that would occur from this would eventually fade, there would always be the thought of the team trying something to devalue a player to make them less attractive to other teams while also lowering their value.

As much as this speculation and the thoughts that the Dallas organization may be involved, it could also hurt Dez Bryant just as much. The emotional wide receiver has been a monster and put up monster numbers as well. He is easily one of the top wide receivers in the game today and deserves to be paid as such. But if this video, that ESPN’s Adam Schefter said recently he has been working on since September, comes out, it could adversely affect the money that Dez could see. Even though the incident is reportedly from five years ago, the visions of what happened will have a lasting effect on many that watch the tape. And if that moment happens, there will be consequences that Dez and the Dallas organization will have to evaluate. Or course, the Cowboys will take a public relations hit if they are to sign Dez back. But for Dez, the meaning will be even worse than that. The realization that the Cowboys could pull any offer from him is a reality. With the awareness of domestic violence at an all-time high, it would be hard for Dez to survive the alleged incident in the current climate in the NFL. If it is anywhere as bad as what has been said, this could be a career-ender perhaps. It is said to be five times worse than the Ray Rice video and Rice has yet to land a contract with any team after his incident. So imagine what the ramifications could be for Bryant. And his reputation is not the greatest compared to what Rice’s was before the incident.

Ultimately, it seems like it is too convenient that the rumor of this video seems to pop up right around contract time for Dez. This could potentially be someone other than the Cowboys at work on this one. Or it could be something that is fabricated as well. The best guess is that the Cowboys have nothing to do with this one and that someone else is behind this matter. Only time will tell and hopefully we will find out the real truth soon.

I’m going to continue to stand on the sidelines and watch. Something is definitely going on that’s for sure but exactly what I haven’t decided yet. We don’t have all the facts yet. That much I’d bet on!

I had read that the so called “Tape” is a threatening ploy from some of Dez Bryant’s Former friends – who he Cut Off a while ago. I Don’t think there IS a Tape…IF there Was one, it would have been out, by Now – for Outlets such as TMZ would have Bidded on It n the Tape would’ve been Revealed. As for Jerry & Stephen Jones, I don’t think their Reluctance on paying Dez Bryant his Deserving Due is behind the rumors of a Tape – Nor, are they behind the rumor of it. I think it has to do with Dez Bryant’s Lifestyle and the Company he keeps is what Jerry Jones is hesistant on the Guaranteed Money that Dez Bryant wants. As for DeMarco Murray, the Cowboys are Not going to resign him…they’re going to let him Test Free Agency n Sign elsewhere and either acquire Adrian Peterson and/or Draft a Running Back with their 1st Round Pick.

100% agreed, I followed the money trail and leads back to the Cowboys and Jerry Jones. I grew up a Cowboys fan but at this age I quickly realize that devaluing the product justifies the means. If they let Dez walk other teams would gladly meet his asking price.
