Erislandy Lara is a Cuban-born boxer who defected to pursue his dreams in the ring.  Lara was unsuccessful in his first attempt to defect, but ultimately was able to escape, and will next be seen in the ring in what will no doubt be the biggest bout of his career when he takes on Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez live on pay per view on Saturday, July 12, 2014, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Lara took some time away from his training to talk on the eve of Father’s Day about being a dad.  “Fatherhood means everything to me. I was raised by my mother and never met my father so being there for my kids’ needs is very important to me. I have two sons in Cuba I haven’t seen in six years and that hurts me more than anything.  That made me realize how important being a father is to me. Love, support and time, those are my keys to being a good father.”

To be honest, hearing Lara say that made me a bit sad and emotional, but when I asked him to choose a superpower as a father, I was delighted by his answer. “I would want my superpower to (to be the ability to) fly like Superman so I can fly to visit my kids in Cuba and give them the proper time they deserve. God willing hopefully One day I will!”  Let’s all hope that Lara does have the ability to see his sons soon, and don’t forget to watch him take on Canelo live on pay per view Saturday, July 12.
