Opening Night Victory for Fordham Rams by Brandon Nix


The Fordham Rams began the season with an impressive win at Rose Hill Gym Friday night over the NYIT Bears. In the first half the Rams started off with 11-0 run thanks to some early fast break points. The Bears struggled early in the first half but senior guard Darian Hooker got the Bears going with a pair of three-pointers. The Rams tried to stretch the lead further with big shots made by freshman forward Eric Paschall. The Bears held on to keep the game close but the Rams continued to hit shots towards the end of the half. With a few minutes remaining in the first half Fordham took over the game with an emphatic dunk by Paschall that got the crowd energized. The Rams finished the first half on a 13-4 run with contributors Ryan Rhoomes going for 12 points and 9 rebounds, Chris Sengfelder adding for 10 points and 4 rebounds and Eric Paschall contributing 22 points and 7 rebounds. The final score of the first half ended with Fordham leading 51-38.

In the second half the Rams opened up with a 7-0 run to extend the lead to 20. From then on the Rams never looked back, pushing their lead up to 25. NYIT struggled to score even as senior guard Darian Hooker was hitting his shots. The Bears missed field goal attempts and committed several turnovers that led to transition baskets for the Rams. The game ended with the Fordham Rams winning 94-77. The stars of the night were two players with double-doubles, junior forward Ryan Rhoomes with 12 points and 13 rebounds, and Paschall with 31 points and 10 rebounds. “To do it at home I was pleased for an early game early in the season, “ Fordham coach Tom Pecora said about the first win of the season.
