Jim Boeheim “It’s A Great Way to Go Out If This Is It” by Derrel Jazz Johnson

With Syracuse leaving the Big East after this season to join the ACC, they are facing some of their rivals for the last time. That makes it fitting that the Orangemen will face Georgetown tomorrow in the semifinals of the Big East Men’s Basketball Championship tomorrow night. Syracuse Men’s Basketball head coach Jim Boeheim alluded to this during the press conference after a win over the Pittsburh Panthers.

“It’s a great way to go out if this is it, for this league as it’s constituted now” Boeheim said during his press conference after the Thursday afternoon win. Indeed it will be fitting, as Boeheim will coach against Georgetown’s Men’s Basketball Head Coach John Thompson, III, while his father, John Thompson, Jr., whom Boeheim had many legendary Big East battles with as the former coach oh the Hoyas, likely watching from the stands. Former greats from both programs, possibly Dikembe Mutumbo of Georgetown, and Derrick Coleman and John Wallace of Syracuse, all who were in the stands for Thursday’s quarterfinals, at the games as well.

Whether Syracuse or Georgetown advances, Friday night will truly be an end to the Big East Conference as we know it. Georgetown will play in the 10-team new Big East, and Syracuse in the ACC. I wouldn’t be surprised if one of the coaches got teary eyed, as nostalgia will definitely be in the air Friday night.
