Kyrie Irving enjoys history-making night in win over Spurs

When LeBron James returned to the Cleveland Cavaliers over the summer, and the team traded for power forward Kevin Love later during the offseason, there were some foolish enough to think that Kyrie Irving would be the third-most important player on the team.  On some nights, Irving is even more important to the team than LeBron himself.

Irving scored a career-high 57 points on 20-32 from the field, going perfect from both the three-point arc (7-7) and the free-throw line (10-10) to lead the Cavs to a 128-125 win over the defending champion Spurs in San Antonio yesterday.

With his historic night, Irving set numerous records.  His 57 points set a new franchise record for the Cavaliers.  His 57 points were the most scored against a defending NBA Champion since Wilt Chamberlain scored 62 against the Boston Celtics during the 1961-62 NBA season.

Though LeBron James has played with numerous future Hall of Famers, including Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and Shaquille O’Neal, Irving’s 57 points were the most ever scored by a teammate of James.

Irving became the first player to have multiple games of 55 or more points since the 2006-2007 season, when Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers had three games of 55 or more points.

Kyrie joins LeBron as the only players to have multiple 50-point games in one season for the Cavs.

Kyrie’s 57-point game was the most scored against a team coached by future Hall of Fame head coach Gregg Popovich.  Irving’s 57 points also tied Purvis Short with the most scored in a game against the Spurs franchise.

Irving also matched the most points scored by a player going perfect from the three-point arc, a record also held by Short.

Kyrie joined LeBron again as one of only three players to have multiple 50-point games before the age of 23, also joining Rick Barry.

Before LeBron returned to the Cavs, some saw the talents of Kyrie Irving, but mostly in losing efforts.  Now, the NBA watches as Irving continues to enjoy that personal success, but this season, on a winning Cavs team.
