Lakers and Knicks worth over combined $5 billion despite losing

Despite both teams losing at historic rates, the Los Angeles Lakers and New York Knicks are the most valuable franchises in the NBA.  The Lakers overtook the Knicks in the last year, despite a 27-55 record last season.  The Lakers are valued at $2.6 billion, while the Knicks are second, valued at $2.5 billion despite having the franchise’s worst start in history, currently at 6-36.  The Lakers are currently 12-30.

Though these are the valuations, when a team goes on the market, history has shown that teams will be purchased above their valuations, as shown when Steve Ballmer purchased the Los Angeles Clippers from Donald Sterling for $2 billion.  With these valuations, not surprising to see why Brooklyn Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov is reportedly interested in selling the team.

This story will appear in the upcoming issue of Forbes Magazine, but you can see it online here for the top 10.
