Lewis Pitches Gem to Eliminate Yankees in ALCS by Derrel “Jazz” Johnson

Texas Rangers starting pitcher Colby Lewis was spectacular against the New York Yankees, pitching eight innings while only giving up one one on three hits. Ranger closer Neftali Feliz came in to get the final three outs of the game. The disappearance of the powerful Yankee offense and their starting pitching, combined with the quality of the Ranger starting pitching were the biggest surprises in this series. The Yankees only got two quality starts in this series, and one was a loss in game three by Andy Pettitte.

The Rangers scored first once again, after a Vladimir Guerrero ground out scored Elvis Andrus for a 1-0 lead. Alex Rodriguez scored on a wild pitch by Lewis tn the fifth inning, but Texas would come back in the bottom of the inning with a two-run double by Guerrero and a two-run homer by Nelson Cruz off of Yankee reliever David Robertson, who replaced Phil Hughes, who lost his second game of the series. Texas went into the sixth inning with a 5-1 lead, and there would be no comeback in this game, as Lewis continued to shut down the powerful Yankee lineup.

The Texas Rangers, a franchise of 50 years, earned their first home playoff win, their first playoff series win, and now, their first American League pennant. The Yankees, meanwhile, ended a season with lots of hope for a second-straight World Series win without a trip to the World Series to a team they were highly favored to defeat, leading to the New York Post cover calling the team a “$210M Bust.”

Josh Hamilton won the ALCS MVP Award, hitting .350 (7-20) with four homers, an on-base percentage of .536 after eight walks, five intentional, a new ALCS record. He was intentionally walked three times in game six, and Vladimir Guerrero drove in his first three runs of the series.
