Floyd Mayweather took trash talk to another level at the kickoff press conference for his rematch against Marcos Maidana in New York City Monday.  “It’s safe to say I’m not fighting a boxer, I’m fighting an MMA fighter,” he said.  Mayweather repeatedly referred to the “dirty tactics” employed by Maidana in their first bout.  He also took a shot at media members and others.

“I haven’t just been fighting my opponents.  I have been fighting everyone else, the media, the critics, the biased fans.  It comes with the territory.”  Money Mayweather then went on to discuss a couple of his former opponents. “(Miguel) Cotto is a solid competitor but we saw what happened to him against Floyd Mayweather. When he fought me, they said he was washed up. Then, he fights again and wins, and apparently, he has been resurrected, same with Marquez.”

The highest paid athlete in the world continued.  “When I fought Marquez he was over the hill, he was washed up, but then he came back and knocked (Manny) Pacquiao out then he’s pound-for-pound one of the best.”

Mayweather then trash talked some more. “Is Maidana a better fighter than Canelo? No. Cotto? No. He’s just a dirtier fighter. I didn’t get a deep gash from a punch; I got it from a head butt.”  Floyd then addressed the popular issues of Maidana’s gloves not being used in the first fight. “First they [Team Maidana] want to use gloves with no padding, and then they want to use knees, elbows and everything else. My back is always against the wall with Team Maidana.”

Maidana, through a translator, wasn’t left out of the trash talk.  “Although I recognize Mayweather is a great boxer, fighting him was easier than many people think. He has a good defense, but he has flaws and he showed them last May,” said Maidana. “If you want to see a real fight, watch us on September 13. I’m going to win this fight.”

The next day Maidana took the trash talk to a higher level at a press conference in Chicago.  “I’m going to have to go for the knockout this time, I have no choice. Floyd’s defense is very good and at times it is hard to hit him…first, I’m going to give him a beating and then I’m going to knock him out.  It’s going to be hard to get a decision because he connects well and knows how to score points.”

The trash talk will continue until September I am certain, but will ‘Mayhem’ take place in the ring once again?  In a little less than two months, we shall all see what happens in Mayweather versus Maidana 2.
