Nets Deron Williams, Kris Humphries and DeShawn Stevenson Visit Brooklyn High School by Derrel “Jazz” Johnson

I had the pleasure of visiting Brooklyn High School for Leadership and Community Service for a basketball clinic yesterday led by New Jersey Nets players Deron Williams, Kris Humphries and DeShawn Stevenson. The students roared with excitement at the three Nets players entered the high school gym, and the players themselves enjoyed the event as well, as both Williams and Humphries spoke about their excitement of being able to interact with the students. Neither player had the privilege of having an NBA player come to their high school, and are delighted to give back.

The New Jersey Nets haven’t had the opportunity to have much fun on the court, as they own an 8-21 record, and are just 3-10 at home in their last season in New Jersey, where they play at the Prudential Center. The condensed season has been even more difficult on the The New Jersey Nets, as they have suffered a lot of injuries this season, namely to center Brooks Lopez, who was injured in a preseason game against the New York Knicks. Lopez has yet to be cleared for practice, but is expected to be cleared soon.

Coming into the season, I thought the Nets had a chance to contend for a playoff spot. Though they are 8-21, the Nets have been in most of their games this season, and losing an all-star talent like Lopez on a
team that already had offensive deficiencies was a blow the team could not withstand. Lopez is by far the best low-post threat on the team, and without him, the offense has no balance. Hopefully the team can turnaround the season quickly upon his return and give the New Jersey fans a great final season in New Jersey.

It’s always touching to see professional athletes getting out and giving back to the community.
