Nigeria defeated the John Calipari-led Domincan Republic yesterday 88-73 in Venezuela to earn the final Olympic berth for basketball in the upcoming London games. Ike Diogu scored 25 points for Nigeria. Yack Martinez led the Dominican Republic with 16 points. Speaking of basketball at the London Olympics, USA Basketball finalized their roster Saturday, and it will include locals Tyson Chandler and Carmelo Anthony from the New York Knicks and Deron Williams from the Brooklyn Nets. The US team will compete in Group A against Lithuania, Nigeria, Tunisia, France and Argentina. Group B will feature Russia, China, Britain, Brazil, Australia and Spain. The Dominican Republic will play the U.S. in an exhibition game Thursday in Las Vegas.

Roger Federer won his seventh Wimbledon crown yesterday by defeating Andy Murray 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4. It is his 17th title overall, the most of anyone. He also returns to the #1 ranking for the first time since 2010. The Big Three of Tennis, Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic, have won the last 11 Grand Slam titles. On Saturday, Serena Williams won her fifth Wimbledon title, tying her with her sister Venus. It is her 14th Grand Slam win. The sisters have won 10 of the last 13 crowns at the All England Club.

The New York Yankees took three out of four at Fenway Park against the Boston Red Sox, who they lead by 9.5 games at the All-Star break. At 52-33, the Yankees have the best record in Major League Baseball. Yankee and Dominican native Robinson Cano will lead the American League team in tonight’s Home Run Derby.

The New York Mets closed out the first half in unimpressive fashion, as they lost to the Chicago Cubs 7-0 in a game that took only two hours and eight minutes. By comparison, the first inning of Friday’s Yankees/Red Sox game took over an hour.

Finally, in a feverish week of NBA free agency that saw Deron Williams and Joe Johnson agree to deals with the Brooklyn Nets, Steve Nash agree to join the Los Angeles Lakers, Jason Kidd land with the New York Knicks and Ray Allen take his talents to South Beach to join the Miami Heat, Dwight Howard remains the biggest piece possibly in play. The Nets and Lakers are trying to make a deal for the perenial first-team All-NBA center, but will a deal be made? Tune in to find out.
