Serena Williams is viewed as the favorite to win the 2012 US Open not only by many tennis fans and members of the media, but by other players as well. After dominating Maria Sharapova to win Olympic gold in London, she is playing some of the best tennis of her career. “I think Serena is probably the favorite coming in given her recent form. No matter who you are, I don’t think you can deny that,” said Samantha Stosur, defending US Open champion after defeating Serena in the 2011 US Open Women’s Final.

Kim Clijsters, who along with Serena Williams, is a three-time US Open Champion, took it a step further. “To me Serena is the best ever just because I think physically she just stands out.” Clijsters added “She’s fast, she’s strong, she has a very good eye as well. I think the combination of that…is the best player ever.”

Sharapova talked about Serena as well. “Obviously she’s the favorite because she won those two big events (Wimbledon and the Olympics) back-to-back.” Sharapova also stated “She gained a tremendous amount of confidence at Wimbledon. You know, she had a tough few matches…when she got to the Olympics, with every match, you saw some of her matches, she just improved. I think she took that confidence and she played just really great physical tennis.”

Williams was on a roll a little under a year ago as well, when she entered the 2011 US Open Women’s Final against Samantha Stosur, and lost. Serena Williams does enter the 2012 US Open as the clear favorite, as many tennis pundits and players favor her, but the real winner will be determined on the court at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
