Sloane Stephens Faces Ana Ivanovic for the Second-Straight US Open by Derrel “Jazz” Johnson
- Updated: September 1, 2012
Sloane Stephens has advanced to the third round of the 2012 US Open for the second-straight year, and, ironically, will face her third-round opponent from last year, Ana Ivanovic. In last year’s match, Ivanovic was victorious in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, but this year may be different.
Thus far in the 2012 US Open, Stephens has had an impressive victory over the 2010 French Open champion Francesca Schiavone in the first round in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, and outlasted Tatjana Malek in the second round with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 win.
Ivanovic, meanwhile, has yet to lose a set in the tournament, with two relatively easy wins over Elina Svitolina, 6-3, 6-2, and Sofia Arvidsson, 6-2, 6-2. She is not overlooking the next challenge, however, saying about Stephens “I played her last year here…she’s improved a lot since then.”
Tonight’s match will be the first at Arthur Ashe Stadium tonight, and a sellout crowd of over 23,000 is expected.
