Teixeira Powers Yankees to 1-0 Lead in ALDS Derrel “Jazz” Johnson

Mark Teixeira hit a two-run homer to give the New York Yankees the lead and Mariano Rivera earned his 40th post-season save by getting the final four outs of the game as the Yankees won the first game of the American League Divisional Series in Minnesota. Francisco Liriano breezed through the first five innings against what seemed to be a tentative and conservative approach by the Yankees, but the powerful Yankee offense exploded for four in the sixth, highlighted by a two-run triple by Curtis Granderson, before Teixeira’s two-run homer in the sixth. C.C. Sabathia wasn’t up to usual standards, but kept the Yankees within striking distance, although he surrendered the lead with a game-tying, bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the fifth inning. CC Sabathia earned the win, giving up three earned runs in sixth innings. Jesse Crain, who gave up the two-run shot to Teixeira, earned the loss.

The Twins have lost 10-straight games in the post season, including three in a sweep against the Yankees in the playoffs last year, and one must start to think that this is having a mental impact on the team. They will need to regain their confidence quickly, as game two is tonight with first pitch at 6:07pm, and will pit former Yankee Carl Pavano (17-11, 3.75) against all-time post season wins leader Andy Pettitte (11-3, 3.28, 18 postseason wins).
